Introducing the STS at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, Gary Cowger, president of General Motors North America, said the sedan will deliver "serious performance credentials." One of two engines can be installed: a 3.6-liter V-6 or a Northstar 4.6-liter V-8. STS models fitted with V-8 power can have either rear- or all-wheel drive. When rolling through broken or lumpy pavement, that AWD-equipped sedan version felt less confident than a standard model. All-wheel drive enhances driver confidence on slippery surfaces but isn't particularly evident otherwise. Because the V-6 engine delivers plenty of zest, there's not much need to move up to the more powerful and costly V-8. The G35 is based on the Nissan FM platform shared with the Nissan 350Z coupe and roadster sports car and Infiniti FX crossover SUV. The FM platform stands for "front midship" design where the engine is moved back towards the rear of the engine bay which in turn improves the weight distribution. The G35 was Motor Trend's Car of the Year for 2003 and has been well-received by both the media and customers as a viable alternative to other luxury cars. The G35 was also nominated for the North American Car of the Year award that year and was on the Car and Driver Ten Best list for 2003 and 2004. Sporting the ubiquitous VQ35DE engine, the Infiniti G35 uses a front-midship engine, rear-wheel drive layout (all-wheel drive is available for the G35x sedan) to achieve a 52% front/48% rear weight distribution. Both body styles are available with either a 5-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission, although the automatic is the only transmission available for the AWD sedan. A 6-speed manual transmission became available in 2003 as a 2003 model on the sedan (the coupe always had the option). Buicks full-size LeSabre sedan still rides the same front-wheel-drive platform and is powered by the same 3.8-liter V-6 engine as the Pontiac Bonneville, though Pontiac also offers a supercharged V-6. Some 10,000 LeSabre examples of a new Celebration Edition will be built and will feature blacked-out grille bars, body-colored lower fascias and rocker moldings, 16-inch chromed-aluminum wheels, two-tone leather seating and Black Cherry woodgrain interior trim. GMs OnStar communication system, the StabiliTrak electronic stability system and a head-up windshield display are standard. Turn-signal indicators are incorporated into the side mirrors. Nothing like the big Buicks of old, the modern LeSabre offers plenty of passenger space, a satisfying ride experience, reasonable fuel economy and a moderate price. Not only is performance smooth, but this sedan is also more satisfying than many shoppers may expect. The LeSabre accelerates eagerly practically lunging ahead when the gas pedal hits the floor and takes full advantage of its excellent powertrain. Downshifts are quick and easy, which helps give the sensation of a lighter automobile. Its handling is passable, and the LeSabre feels more secure in corners and curves than some smaller, sportier models. Lincoln's most popular model stays the course for 2000, getting only a handful of minor changes for the new model year. The rear-drive Town Car is the most traditional of Lincoln's current lineup, offering convenience and luxury in a full-size package that appeals to an older crowd. The average buyer age, according to Lincoln, is 68. Town Car's archrival, the front-drive Cadillac DeVille, has a new design this year. Town Car's last overhaul was for the 1998 model year. Sales of the Town Car have been sliding in recent years, but Lincoln says it will continue to offer the car as long as there is sufficient demand. At 215 inches overall, the rear-drive Town Car has 8 more inches of sheet metal than the front-drive DeVille. When the Town Car was redesigned for 1998, it lost 3 inches of body length while gaining rounder, softer styling. The Town Car is built on a stretched version of the platform used for the Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. Lincoln's version is 3 inches longer in wheelbase (117.7 inches) and about 3 inches longer overall than its Ford and Mercury counterparts. With its long wheelbase and wide interior, the Town Car provides ample room for occupants to lounge at least the ones in the outboard seats. The middle seats straddle the driveshaft tunnel and have less legroom and comfort than other positions. The split front bench seat and wide rear bench coddle the outboard passengers by comparison. Wide, tall doors make it easy to get in or out, and all models come with standard leather upholstery and lavish amounts of comfort and convenience features. The trunk holds 20.6 cubic feet of luggage, though most of that comes from a deep center well that is awkward to load or unload because the spare tire hangs over the back side. A 200-horsepower, 4.6-liter V-8 and four-speed automatic transmission are standard in the Executive and Signature models. A 215-horsepower version of that engine with dual exhausts is standard in the top-shelf Cartier model and included with the Touring Package available on the Signature. Standard safety features include side-impact airbags for the front seats, anti-lock brakes and traction control. The Town Car lost a little size and weight in its last redesign and gained some athletic ability. It is still a large, cushy, traditional American luxury car but far more agile and manageable than previous versions.
